Creation of BRICS-based free trade zone not on agenda, says Russian ministry
It is reported that Russia has common trade space within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), South Africa participates in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), while Brazil is a member of the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR).
MOSCOW, February 28. /TASS/. The issue of creating a free trade zone on the basis of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), or ‘BRICS plus’, is not on the agenda now, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin said in an interview with TASS.
"The issue of creating a free trade zone on the basis of BRICS, or in an extended format of ‘BRICS plus’, is not on the agenda now. This is not a simple task," he said, adding that before starting the discussion it is necessary to comprehensively analyze the economic viability and added value for all participants of the organization from the creation of such a mechanism.
Russia has common trade space within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), South Africa participates in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), while Brazil is a member of the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), Pankin said, adding that there are also bilateral agreements between BRICS member states and other integrations, such as India’s agreement with ASEAN countries.
